Hello everyone! I’m new to the group and wanted to introduce myself. We have been blessed with a baby boy, and are in the waiting phase currently (he’s almost three-weeks old). His birth mother still has to go to court to terminate her parental rights, and then we’re also dealing with the Interstate Compact and are waiting to get approval to take him home! I look forward to meeting others and sharing about our open adoption experience.

Hi Kyla!
Here’s a link for what the Interstate Compact is: http://www.thestork.com/intstate.html. As you’ll see, it basically happens when a child is born in one state and adopted by someone living in another state. My husband and I live in NC and our son was born in MI. We took temp. custody of him on the day he was born, and we brought him home from the hospital the next day. He’s been in our care since his birth.
In the state of MI there’s a 30-day period of time between the time paperwork is filed and when the birth parents go before the judge to terminate their rights. At the same time, the interstate happens and it takes between 2-4 weeks to go through.
So, while we’re waiting to bring him home to NC, we have had temp. custody of him. Once his birth mom goes before the judge (in a week or two), she will terminate her rights and then there’s a 21-day period of time in which she can change her mind, but really only in the case of fraud.
Interstate happens all the time and depending on the states, it can take longer or shorter. It’s not referred to as ”foster” at all in MI. It’s temporary custody, but basically we are acting as foster parents until the bm goes and signs over her rights.Does that make sense?

I am so sorry I only just saw this now! I need to log into this site more frequently

Well that is quite a doozy. Reading the additional details, I totally understand why you wouldn't want to reach out to A mom w/out first giving your daughter the opportunity to tell her, and/or also [...]9 months, 2 weeks ago · View

Hi Leigh!

I have given this a lot of thought too. Every minute of every day for the past 7 days! It's a toughy!
I have the privilege of seeing a side of M right now that her mother doesn't see. The facebook side.

Hi Mama Kris! I read this last night and have been giving my response some thought….
First of all, I'm so happy to hear that your daughter contacted you! That's a personal dream of mine (my b-daughter is only 8 though so I may have to wait awhile

I am just now coming out of my denial about my adoption journey. I am a birthmom of 14 years.
I went thru a private attorney and an adoption mediation service – Gift of Life – in Florida.
I chose M's parents, interviewed them and they flew down when i gave birth. I have blocked out sooo

Heather posted on the forum topic Organizations that support open adoption in the group Domestic Infant Adoption:
What a nice idea! Two that come to mind are the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute (http://www.adoptioninstitute.org) and Ethica (http://www.ethicanet.org). Both have publicly advocated open adoption and open records. They have non-profit status, so the gifts would be tax-deductible.

Hi everyone,
Our baby girl is approaching her first birthday. We have a tradition in our family of selecting an organization/charity every year and then asking friends and family to consider a donation as part of or in lieu of gifts. I would love to select a charity for her first birthday that is related to [...]10 months ago · View
